Although modern models like the Silverado and Colorado go back to the start of the 21st Century, the legacy of Chevy trucks reaches back much further to more than 100 years ago. In 1918, the Chevy Model 490 light-duty truck hit the market and was soon joined by the Chevrolet Model T one-ton truck, Chevy's first purpose-built pickup. This was sold as a rolling chassis that could then be upfitted with the body of choice by the customer, creating a powerful option that was immediately popular among farmers and people in trades.
About a decade later, in 1929, Chevy introduced the AC Light Delivery model. This was the first truck in the industry to feature an Overhead-Valve (OHV) six-cylinder engine, called the Stovebolt or the Cast-Iron Wonder, due to its design. This engine revolutionized truck performance and guided much of Chevy's design for decades to follow. The 1938 Chevy Half-Ton was a gorgeous piece of machinery and reflected a new focus on aesthetics thanks to Chevy's Art and Color department. It was also the last new Chevy truck before World War II.
In 1941, Chevy's manufacturing resources shifted to the war effort, and consumer trucks would not roll out of Chevy's plants until well after the war ended. It wasn't until 1947 that we saw the introduction of Chevy's first post-war pickup: the 3100 Series or Advance Design truck was marked by a horizontal five-bar front grille and a stunning and fresh overall look. This was followed by the Task Force Chevy trucks in 1955 and then the popular Chevy C/K series of trucks in 1960. These models were named for the internal code used to indicate Chevy trucks with two-wheel drive (C) or four-wheel drive (K).
In 1967, Chevy introduced the Action Line, which was the second generation for the C/K series of trucks, adding impressive comfort and convenience features to the pickups. A major change came in 1973 with the introduction of the Chevy C30 One-Ton dually, the first crew cab dually to hit the market, defining what people would expect from heavy-duty trucks ever since. Chevy introduced the S-10 pickup in 1982, a "light-utility vehicle" that can be viewed as the precursor to the modern Colorado, providing a smaller option for truck fans. The fourth and final generation of the C/K series launched in 1988, but even better trucks were on the horizon.
In 1999, Chevy established the identity of its modern truck lineup with the introduction of the Silverado full-size truck, replacing the popular C/K series with an all-new platform designed for incredible amounts of power and capability. The Silverado has gone through numerous updates and generations since then, becoming the quintessential example of what we expect a truck to be. Chevy reinforced its success in 2004 when it introduced the Colorado to replace the S-10. The Colorado went on a hiatus following the 2012 model year but returned in 2015 as a fully-redesigned midsize pickup. Today, the Chevy Silverado and Colorado have become the face of the truck market, representing everything drivers expect from powerful and reliable pickups.
