  • Overview

A dark green 2020 Chevy Blazer is facing left.

The name “Blazer” joined Chevrolet’s lineup in 1969. The vehicle was known as the K5 Blazer and was a full-size SUV on a truck chassis. With straight axles and suspension, the Chevy Blazer could be easily transformed into the ultimate off-road vehicle. The most recent version, the 2020 Chevy Blazer, is no exception to the models of the past five decades.

Early Blazers were offered with both six and eight-cylinder engines and the choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. In the second generation, which hit the market in 1973, models with automatic transmissions received full-time four-wheel drive, and an aluminum transfer case was added.

When the third generation arrived in 1992, Chevy had engineered the Blazer to fit full-size truck platforms, making it the same size as the Suburban. Powered by a 5.7L V8 engine with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, the Blazer also offered a 6.5L turbo-diesel V8 option.

A smaller S-10 Blazer was produced between 1982 and 1994 and was available with a four or six-cylinder engine and two or four doors. As the higher-end TrailBlazer picked up steam on the market, the Blazer name was quietly retired in 2005.

In 2019, the Blazer returned to the American automotive market as a five-passenger, midsize crossover SUV. While it lacks the rugged appearance of its predecessor, it lost nothing in capability. For 2020, the Chevy Blazer has up to 64.2 cubic feet of cargo space, and the ability to tow up to 4,500 pounds.

Though it may have changed its appearance several times, the Chevy Blazer has been an American mainstay for over 50 years, and the 2020 model is even more amazing than ever.

  • Performance

A red 2020 Chevy Blazer is driving on a city street in Indianapolis, IN.

When looking at any vehicle, the engine is a great place to start because so many other aspects of its performance and the driving experience it offers rely on the engine. The 2020 Chevy Blazer has three different engines available, though your choices are greatly impacted by which trim level you look at, so keep that in mind. Even so, all three of these engines are excellent and provide you with great overall power and performance.

    Blazing Performance

The standard engine on the 2020 Chevy Blazer is an EcoTec 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that provides you with up to 193 hp and up to 188 lb-ft of torque. This is a great place to start, but you have more options if you want even more power. Several of the higher trims for the Blazer start with a 2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder engine instead, which offers up to 230 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. As you can see, this is substantially higher power and makes for an enjoyable driving experience. There is also a third engine available on some of these trims, which comes standard on the highest trims for the Blazer. This is a 3.6L V6 engine that delivers up to 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque for excellent power and performance.

All three of these engines come with a 9-speed automatic transmission, so you get a smooth and responsive driving experience with any engine you choose, and FWD is standard; AWD is available for the 2.0L Turbo and 3.6L V6 engines.

    Towing Capacity

While a midsize SUV might not be the first vehicle you think of for optimal towing, the 2020 Blazer does have some tremendous trailering potential. With the standard or available 2.0L Turbo engine, you can get up to 1,500 lbs of towing with the Blazer. When properly configured and with the available 3.6L V6 engine, however, you can get up to 4,500 lbs of towing capacity, making this a great option if you have a trailer or small camper to pull.

  • Safety

Great safety features should always be of the utmost importance to you when looking at any vehicle. It does not matter how much power a car or SUV can deliver or how spacious its interior is if it cannot help keep you and your loved ones safe on the road. Fortunately, the 2020 Chevy Blazer offers a fantastic selection of standard and available safety features to help protect you, though remember that impressive technology cannot replace careful driving.

    Safety with Chevy

Standard safety features on every model of the 2020 Chevy Blazer include StabiliTrak electronic stability and traction control, LED daytime running lamps, and a comprehensive airbag system. The starting trim for the Blazer also consists of an HD rear vision camera, a front outboard passenger sensing system for the front passenger airbag, and a Teen driver system. This system lets you assign a particular key to a young driver. Certain systems are automatically enabled and disabled to encourage safe driving habits and help a new driver stay safer behind the wheel.

Available safety features on the 2020 Chevy Blazer include rear park assist, a rear cross-traffic alert, and a lane change alert with side blind zone alert. You can also get a forward collision alert, enhanced automatic emergency braking to help you avoid front-end collisions and a lane-keep assist system with a lane departure warning. Available adaptive cruise control uses radar technology and sensors to automatically adjust the Blazer’s speed to maintain a safe following distance while you steer, reducing how often you have to brake and accelerate with the cruise control engaged.

With all of these safety features, it is obvious Chevrolet cares about their customers. No matter what option you pick, you are sure to be safe in a 2020 Chevy Blazer.
