Off-road supremacy is the name of the game for the redesigned 2023 Chevy Colorado. Three distinct off-road models show a commitment from the automaker to cater to off-road enthusiasts and those who want to adventure away from the beaten path. Improved powertrain capabilities, tech features, and exterior styling all help make the 2023 Colorado stand out from the competition as a midsize truck to be reckoned with.
New for the 2023 model is the first ever Colorado Trail Boss trim. The Trail Boss joins a line-up of four other trims, which includes the base Work Truck (WT), the customizable LT, the entry-level off-road and performance trim known as the Z71, and the high-performance off-road racing machine known as the ZR2. There's also a special Desert Boss package for the ZR2, which adds under-body cameras, beadlock wheels, and a sports bar with a sail panel. The four available off-road trims are all tuned for different purposes and levels of capability, from off-road enthusiasts to serious overlanders who plan to trek across unpaved terrain.
In addition to the new trim structure and focus on off-roading, the 2023 Colorado also features more cargo bed functionality and storage options, giving truckers more ways to store cargo in this midsize pickup. These features accompany an improved line-up of three different powertrain configurations based on a single power plant. Additionally, you can get the Colorado in eight different color options, including Glacier Blue, Nitro Yellow, Radiant Red, Sand Dune, and Harvest Bronze.
Powering the 2023 Chevy Colorado is a single four-cylinder power plant taken directly from the full-size Chevy Silverado. The revamped turbocharged 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder comes standard in every trim of the Colorado. However, there are tweaks to the engine that allows you to take advantage of different levels of horsepower and torque. That's right, it's the same engine but with different power output depending on what you need the Colorado for.
The base configuration produces 237 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque. Then there's the Turbo Plus iteration of the engine that outputs 310 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. The Turbo Plus comes standard on the Z71 and Trail Boss trims. However, it is also available as an option for the WT and LT trims. Further up the chain is the 2.7-liter Turbo High-Output four-cylinder shared with the Silverado. This iteration of the engine is tuned for maximum torque, delivering 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. This engine comes standard on the ZR2 trim, giving off-roaders a lot of leeway in tackling rocky trails, dirt paths, and sandy deserts. All three variations of the four-cylinder engine are matched up with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 2023 Colorado has three distinct chassis configurations designed for different kinds of off-road use. The standard setup is found on the WT, LT, and Z71 trims. The Trail Boss has a lifted suspension and ultra-wide stance that gives you two inches of additional height and a three-inch wider track. The ZR2 features a high-performance suspension, specially tuned with a three-inch lift and the same ultra-wide stance as the Trail Boss.
The WT and LT trims have a ground clearance of 7.9 inches, while the Z71 has a small lift for 8.9 inches of ground clearance. The Trail Boss tops out at 9.5 inches of ground clearance. If you need the ultimate off-road machine, the ZR2 nets you a massive 10.7 inches of ground clearance with 33-inch mud-terrain tires and Multimatic DSSV dampers.
The Colorado is more than capable when it comes to work site activity, thanks to its towing and hauling capabilities, combined with its selectable drive modes. You can tow up to a best-in-class 7,700 lbs, perfect for a number of different tasks and hauling requirements. This gives the Colorado a lot of range as both an enthusiast truck you drive for fun and a serious work truck when you need it for the tasks only a pickup can handle.
The 2023 Chevy Colorado is intended to be a multi-function midsize pickup truck. This echoes throughout every part of its design, including the all-new integrated tailgate storage unit, giving you a multi-function tailgate that can store items in the tailgate itself. There's a built-in tailgate measurement tool, perfect for when you're doing on-site cutting, carpentry, metalworking, or repairs. The eight fixed tie-down clamps and nine available flexible tie-downs also add to the Colorado's functionality.
For the ZR2 and ZR2 Desert Boss, flow-tie badging in the grille helps with engine airflow, while the shortened rear overhang and optimized front and rear bumpers improve handling and off-road capabilities. With an LED lighting array, including headlamps, taillamps, and foglamps, and up to five selectable drive modes, you can take advantage of the Colorado's capabilities no matter the weather or terrain. The five drive modes include Off-Road, Terrain, Baja, Tow/Haul, and Normal.
With the standard four-door crew cab configuration, you have enough interior space to seat up to five people across two rows. You can access storage compartments, cupholders, and more in the streamlined cabin. You have multiple interior materials to choose from, including a Jet Black interior with Adrenaline Red stitching lining the seats or Jet Black with Bright Silver cross-accent stitching. Outboard vents, knee pads, and a revamped center console stack mean you have more comfort and accessibility for the features you value than any previous model of the Chevy Colorado.
While the new performance specs, design elements, and updates to the interior are all great features for the 2023 Chevy Colorado, one of the most exciting aspects of the new model year is the revamped infotainment suite. An improved eight-inch digital driver information display unit means you have complete access to the Colorado's telematics and vehicle health, along with other useful information to help you navigate on or off the road with ease. The driver information display is also accompanied by a new, much larger HD touchscreen.
The 2023 Colorado now has a standard 11.3-inch HD touchscreen powered by the Chevrolet Infotainment System. This means that you can readily access all of your favorite media and apps from a larger, clearer, and more functional display unit. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included in this upgrade, so your favorite music, podcasts, and media can easily be accessed. And with Bluetooth wireless support, you can make phone calls with voice pass-through for your smartphone or send text messages.
All of the infotainment is now powered by Google Built-In, creating a synergistic ecosystem that makes it easier than ever to access your media, apps, and customizable profiles. This extends to the navigation system, so you can more readily reach your destination with added support from the built-in voice controls to quickly make your way through the streets and avoid congestion, rush hour, or detours. With customizable and configurable screens and displays, it is easy to switch between different functions of the infotainment suite, including up to 10 camera views. This is further aided by features like Hitch Guidance and Hitch View, so you can easily connect and maneuver the Colorado when traveling with a trailer.
The 2023 Chevy Colorado is also on the receiving end of new trailering tech, such as the Chevy Trailering App, so you can make the most of the trailering features of the Colorado. You can also access the Chevy Trailering App through your smartphone, whether inside or outside of the vehicle. This is all in addition to the intuitive suite of driver-assist technology available for the Colorado, from Teen Driver mode to Lane Keep Assist and Front Pedestrian Braking. The Chevy Colorado is fully designed to take advantage of all the latest infotainment and safety tech to keep you safe and informed while on the road.
