Over 50 Years of the Blazer

Seasoned drivers have a certain level of expectations when it comes to the Chevy Blazer. The original K5 Blazer was introduced in 1969 to compete with big, boxy off-road vehicles like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wagoneer. Though the Blazer has gotten a sportier makeover in recent years, it hasn't forgotten its rugged past and still includes features like a well-tuned suspension that can take on all sorts of bumps and a twin-clutch all-wheel drive system for incredible traction.

The current gasoline-powered 2023 Blazer is categorized as a midsize SUV. It offers 64.2 cu.ft. of cargo space with the rear seats folded and can tow up to 4,500 lbs. It comes decked out with a curvy, sporty exterior and has your choice of two engines and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The latter comes with five selectable drive modes to accommodate a variety of driving needs. Though the 2023 Blazer is undoubtedly one of Chevy's more economical SUVs, drivers who select the 3.6L engine with all-wheel drive can expect a fuel economy of just 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway.

    An Electric Future

Enter the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV. Using GM's revolutionary Ultium platform, the electric Blazer is expected to drive up to a maximum of 320 miles on a full charge. That's almost enough to make it from Indianapolis to Chicago and back again without recharging. In fact, the DC fast-charging option offered for the new Blazer EV will allow drivers to gain around 78 miles of driving range in just 10 minutes––the amount of time it takes many drivers to choose a snack at a gas station.

While Chevy hasn't released the Blazer EV's exact specifications for cargo space and towing capacity, early photos and statements from the manufacturer indicate that performance is a top priority. As Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet, stated in the official Blazer EV press release, "The 2024 Blazer EV sets a new tone for electric SUVs, with options and intuitive technologies that help position Chevy for leadership in one of the fastest-growing EV segments."

  • Performance

    A High-Performance SUV

One very exciting part of Chevy's Blazer EV announcement stands out for a variety of reasons: the 2024 Blazer EV will offer an SS trim. This is the first time Chevy has offered an electric SS performance model. SS or "Super Sport" badges have historically been worn by only the coolest and most performance-oriented trims of any Chevy model. The Camaro, Impala, and Chevelle are some of the most iconic Chevy models to wear the SS badge, though the 2006 TrailBlazer was the first SUV to get the treatment.

The 2024 Blazer EV SS is poised to set records. It has been engineered with a performance-tuned all-wheel drive configuration that combines with Chevy's Wide Open Watts technology to generate 557 hp and 648 lb-ft of torque. As a result, it's expected to make the trip from zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds. As you can imagine, this is definitely something new for the Chevy Blazer, and many drivers are eager to try the Blazer EV SS as soon as it's available and put this horsepower to the test.

More Options Than You Can Count

Four trim levels will be offered, each with its own characteristics. The 1LT is the base trim; it has a range of 247 miles and is offered in front-wheel drive only. The 2LT has a longer range at 293 miles per charge, along with the option of all-wheel drive. The RS trim has the longest range at 320 miles per charge and introduces high-speed DC fast charging capability to the lineup. Drivers can also select front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive for the RS. The SS is the top trim, with a 290-mile range and standard all-wheel drive, along with performance-oriented extras, such as 22-inch wheels and a heated flat-bottom steering wheel.

  • Technology

    A Technological Marvel

While an electric vehicle is, in itself, a technological marvel, Chevy goes the extra mile with features that will help drivers in a myriad of ways. For example, a "presence-based liftgate" will be offered as an optional feature on the Blazer EV. This technology detects the vehicle's keyfob and allows hands-free access to the rear cargo area.

Chevy's Super Cruise technology is also slated to be offered on the 2024 Blazer EV. This technology combines cameras, radar, and lidar mapping to allow drivers to enjoy hands-free road trips. Also on board will be the Chevy Safety Assist suite of driver-assistance technology. This includes Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Following Distance Indicator, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and IntelliBeam automatic high beams.

The Blazer EV will also offer drivers a 17.7-inch color touchscreen that accesses the infotainment system, which includes Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. Behind the steering wheel is an 11-inch color Driver Information Center that provides vehicle details such as speed and power reserves.

    EV-Exclusive Features

There are a few EV-exclusive features expected onboard the new Blazer EV. Regen Braking allows drivers to use the accelerator only for One Pedal Driving, which maximizes energy use and helps regenerate battery power when braking. The onboard MyChevy app also provides navigation to charging stations and can calculate routes based on energy usage.

As more and more details are released regarding the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV, drivers and experts alike are becoming more and more excited about the opportunities offered by an all-electric future. While previous attempts at electrifying the driving experience were somewhat lackluster due to short battery ranges and long charging times, technology has allowed us to improve both so that electric driving can be a reality.

The 2024 Blazer EV promises to use these advances to full advantage, creating a vehicle that is bold, powerful, and economical. Combining decades of performance with the Ultium platform, Chevy is offering a sporty SUV that is more than capable of handling the twists and turns of daily driving. While it may seem that words like "fast," "safety-focused," and "economical" don't belong in the same sentence, Chevy has designed the 2024 Blazer EV to prove that wonders never cease.
