If you have been looking forward to the full reveal of a Chevy all-electric pickup, then the wait is over. Chevrolet recently revealed the first details for the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV, and the early impression is absolutely fantastic, with plenty of information to whet our appetites as we eagerly wait for the release in late 2023. Although we will have to wait a bit longer for this bold new truck, what we know so far paints a clear picture of a pickup that does not sacrifice power, capability, or a great driving experience to make the change to an Electric Vehicle (EV).

The Chevy Silverado EV will launch with two models available: the RST, which is the standard version that most of us will get to enjoy, and the WT, which is designed primarily for fleets. No matter which model you choose, however, it will feature a pair of motors that create electric All-Wheel Drive (eAWD) for a fantastic level of control, including four-wheel turning that allows for an incredibly tight turning radius. The RST model features a battery and motor system that delivers 664 hp and 780 lb-ft of torque, while the WT gets 510 hp and 615 lb-ft of torque to help you get your job done.

Charging is a big concern for a lot of people when looking at an electric vehicle, but the all-new Silverado EV makes it simple with support for easy at-home charging and DC Fast Charging. In fact, you will be able to get about 100 miles of range from just 10 minutes of DC Fast Charging, which will make it easy to get where you need to go while towing up to 10,000 lbs of weight behind you. The cutting-edge technology does not end with the new drivetrain, however, since the interior includes a stunning 17-inch infotainment display, an 11-inch reconfigurable driver information display, and a multi-color head-up display spread over 14 inches.

  • Power and Capability

    Plenty of Electric Muscle

Although there is a lot of excitement about the all-electric performance of the 2024 Silverado EV, at the end of the day, it is still a truck. That means we expect it to be able to do all of the things we need our pickup to handle: offer us power comparable to Chevy’s standard Silverado and its Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), with plenty of muscle to go along with it. Fortunately, Chevy understands this and the early numbers on their Silverado EV are more than impressive.

For starters, the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV has a pair of motors, with one on each axle, so every model comes with eAWD functionality. This means the Silverado EV has excellent traction in rough and uneven terrain, plus the power is properly distributed to keep you in control. Just as impressive is the four-wheel turning system that utilizes all four wheels when you turn. The result is a much tighter turning radius than a lot of other trucks have, giving you excellent maneuverability in narrow city streets and on job sites.

The motors on the Silverado EV are quite powerful and can go toe-to-toe with any standard truck on the road. If you choose the RST model, then you get over 660 hp and 780 lb-ft of torque from the motors in this pickup; the fleet-focused WT model comes in just under that with 510 hp and 615 lb-ft of torque. All of this power is impressive on paper, but it is even better than it sounds, thanks to the Wipe Open Watts mode that lets you prioritize power and performance over battery range. In this mode, the Silverado EV can go from 0 to 60 in less than 4.5 seconds, and it maintains that performance over an extended period of time.

    Towing and Payload

Quick acceleration and speed are great, but a truck needs to be able to help you get your job done, and this is another area where the Silverado EV shines. The standard RST model offers up to 10,000 lbs of maximum towing capacity and up to 1,300 lbs of payload capacity, with more cargo space than ever thanks to a front trunk and a massive interior center console. At launch, the WT offers 8,000 lbs of towing capacity and 1,200 lbs of maximum payload, but Chevy is already working on a model that will launch a bit later with up to 20,000 lbs of maximum towing.

  • Battery Charging and Range

    The Ultium Platform

For a lot of people, the lingering concern about switching to an EV model is the limitations or requirements for charging the battery. This is understandable since older EV models often had pretty limited driving range on them, and charging could take a long time. Fortunately, the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV proves that the industry has changed, featuring quick and flexible charging options and a fantastic range to help you get your job done.

As we expected, the Silverado EV utilizes GM’s new Ultium battery platform, which has been developed as their comprehensive solution for EV design across all of their brands. This means that Chevy’s designers and engineers have been able to learn from the work done on other vehicles, like the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq, in order to understand how to best utilize the Ultium platform. The design of this platform allows them to arrange the battery cells in the best way possible for optimal performance and fantastic functionality.

    User-Friendly Charging

All of this hard work has resulted in Chevy’s all-electric Silverado delivering an amazing driving experience and being incredibly user-friendly. The Silverado EV supports all three current levels of charging, so you can easily use a 120v outlet at home to charge overnight or have a 240v level 2 charger installed for even faster at-home charging. On the road, the Silverado EV supports DC Fast Charging at public stations, which lets you get about 100 miles of range from just a 10-minute charge. No matter what you need your truck for, you will be able to charge your pickup and go the distance: the Silverado EV gets an estimated 400 miles of range from a full charge, so even on long trips, you can hit the road and get where you need to go.

  • Advanced Technology

    A Digital Cabin

Although a lot of people are focusing on the impressive Ultium battery platform and incredible performance of the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV, those are far from the only pieces of advanced technology in this truck. The moment you sit inside this pickup, you will immediately notice the massive and absolutely stunning 17-inch LCD freeform infotainment display that dominates the center of the front dashboard and is perfectly set for ideal driver visibility. This is joined by an equally-impressive 11-inch reconfigurable driver instrument display that provides you with the information you need to keep track of while on the road.

Combine these gorgeous screens with a multi-color head-up display that offers a field of view over 14 inches, and you have an amazing way to stay informed while keeping your eyes on the road. This is only the beginning when it comes to driver convenience: the Silverado EV also features GM’s advanced Super Cruise technology. With Super Cruise, you get true hands-free driving on more than 200,000 miles of roads across the US and Canada, which makes long trips far more relaxing. Best of all, the Silverado EV features trailering-capable Super Cruise, so even when you are towing a trailer full of lumber or pulling a boat on the weekend, you can use this advanced technology.

    Functional Technology

Performance and functional technology have also been taken to the next level with the Silverado EV, thanks to an automatic adaptive air suspension. Not only does this provide for an incredibly comfortable ride that can adjust to pretty much any sort of terrain automatically, but it also improves the usability of this pickup. You can lower the rear suspension to its lowest position, which makes it easier to connect or disconnect your trailer to and from your pickup. Combine this with the Multi-Flex Tailgate and exclusive Multi-Flex Midgate, and you get up to 10 feet of useable truck bed length, which is easy to get to and fully utilize. This might not be the most eye-catching piece of technology, but once you start using it, you will wonder how you ever got your job done or enjoyed a day of tailgating without it.
