Crossover SUVs are mighty popular, and why wouldn’t they be? A crossover SUV can satisfy almost every type of driver, from commuters to new drivers. Their structure gives you more cargo room so that you can store luggage or equipment with ease, especially thanks to the fact that you can place down rear seats for extra volume. The underlying body of crossovers also proves to be a benefit; you have the extra space, but your vehicle has the nimble handling of a sedan, so maneuvering narrower streets doesn't become a problem just because you’ve upgraded to an SUV. Whether you’re a single driver or the head of a family, a crossover SUV has a lot to offer and is sure to upgrade your driving life.
Two of the most popular crossover SUVs are the 2024 Chevy Equinox and the 2024 Ford Escape. In fact, the previous model of the Equinox won top placement by the JD Power Awards thanks to its excellence. The Equinox and the Escape are high sellers, and we’re sure you’ve seen them on the road when you’re venturing around Indiana. A natural question arises, however: which model is better for your purposes? Undoubtedly, some personal preferences—especially for design—will play a part in how you decide the crossover for you, but we wanted to pit the two against each other with a comparison of the 2024 Chevy Equinox vs 2024 Ford Escape.
We want to look at some areas of comparison that you might not initially think of, too, such as which one works best if you have a young driver in your household. We believe that, in the end, the Equinox comes out ahead of the Escape in this battle.
Both the Chevy Equinox and the Ford Escape come with impressive safety features that will keep you and your loved ones secure when you’re on the road. With technology in automobiles being smarter than ever, it’s a reasonable expectation that safety features should be intelligent and prevent accidents as much as they lessen the impact when they do happen. The Equinox comes with Chevy Safety Assist, and the Escape has Ford Co-Pilot360, both of which are on the higher end of the safety systems available on the market today.
The safety features in Chevy Safety Assist are some of the most intuitive and intelligent you can find. Forward Collision Warning with Pedestrian Detection lets you know when a person, a vehicle, or an obstacle is in your way, and a collision could soon occur if you do not hit the brakes; this essentially grants you an extra pair of eyes on the road. While an alert driver is always the number one safety system, this ranks as an impressive second.
Working in tandem with Forward Collision Warning is Automatic Emergency Braking. If you enable this feature while driving, it will begin braking for you if a collision seems imminent. When you’re traveling at slow speeds, this can prevent an accident. At higher speeds, it will reduce the impact of the accident. This will grant drivers an extra level of confidence when they’re on the road, as they’ll know Chevy Safety Assist has their back. We find that a driver who has full faith in their vehicle's safety programs becomes a better driver.
These are far from the only features Chevy Safety Assist comes with, too. The cameras on the Equinox are able to alert you when there is a vehicle in one of your blind spots, thanks to Lane Change with Blind Zone Alert. If you’re switching your lane, the Equinox can let you know that a vehicle is near even if you cannot see it. This provides enormous relief to Equinox drivers, as fearing what’s in your blind spot has long been an issue when on the road.
The 2024 Ford Escape’s Co-Pilot360 harbors many similar systems to the Chevy Safety Assist suite. Ford’s Lane Keeping Assist acts similarly to Lane Change with Blind Zone Alert, and Ford’s Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking mirrors Chevy’s Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking. The cross between the two safety programs means you’ll be able to rest easy whether you’re behind the wheel of an Equinox or an Escape. The decision on which one is better comes down to personal preferences. We prefer the intuitive nature of the Chevy Safety Assist, feeling that it’s the easiest safety system to use on the market today.
One of the biggest advantages the Chevy Equinox has is its cost. Chevy wants the Equinox to be available to drivers from all economic backgrounds, so it has consistently kept the sticker price lower than almost all competitors. This has made the Equinox one of Chevy’s best selling vehicles, and it is one reason buyers come back time and again to the Equinox when they need to buy or lease a new ride. You can’t beat the value you are getting with an Equinox.
As the Equinox is largely on the same level as the Escape in terms of performance, the fact that it’s less expensive immediately gives it a huge advantage over the Escape. The Escape also comes with six trims, which means that in order to get all it has to offer, one has to opt for the highest trim; naturally, that high trim costs a lot more than the Escape’s standard sticker price—a price that’s already higher than the Equinox’s.
For cost-conscious Americans (and that’s most of them), the Equinox stands as the ideal crossover SUV purchase. It has similar performance ratings to other crossovers, but it’s able to be bought at a lower price so that customers can invest their hard-earned money elsewhere. When you’re driving your Equinox, you’ll be able to use the money you saved to fund an exciting trip instead of having to leave your new ride in the driveway due to how much money you spent.
A clear area in which the 2024 Chevy Equinox beats the 2024 Ford Escape is with the Equinox’s Teen Driver mode. This tech is standard on the Equinox. The Escape does not have a similar program to compare it to, so there’s no debating which crossover comes out ahead here: the Equinox will work overtime to keep young drivers safe.
This program is essentially a built-in report card that lets you know how your young driver is doing on the road. It will report to you the distance your young driver drove, the top speed reached on the trip, if and how often security systems had to kick in, and any stability control events. There won’t be anything your teen driver is up to that you won’t end up knowing about; this will give you a chance to help guide them based on any mistakes they make while they’re on the road.
The technology can also prevent trouble from occurring. You can ensure that if the driver tries to put the crossover into drive while unbuckled, the Equinox will instead display an alert letting them know their seat has not yet been buckled, and it will not go into drive mode for another 20 seconds. Speed and audio limits can also be put into place. If you do not want your young driver going over a certain speed, you can have the Teen Driver mode activated when they try to accelerate past the limit. You can also set a ceiling on how high the audio in the Equinox can go; this prevents your teen driver from being distracted by loud music when they’re navigating.
Chevy vehicles are unique in that they offer this safety technology for parents. The Equinox has become a favorite of families thanks to the host of features Teen Driver mode provides so that parents can rest a little bit easier. You won’t know the sense of security you can have until you get your hands on Teen Driver mode.
