A good midsize sedan is not as easy to find as it once was, particularly since some brands have completely abandoned this market segment. Fortunately, Chevy still makes one of the most popular and impressive options on the road with the Malibu—but to fully appreciate what it has to offer, it can help to compare it to a similar model. Looking at the 2024 Chevy Malibu vs 2024 Nissan Altima, it is easy to see that both Chevy and Nissan have designed their cars to offer a lot for drivers.
However, while the Altima is certainly a fine option, there are some key ways that it falls short of delivering the kind of experience that you get with the Malibu. For one thing, there is the fact that the Chevy Malibu starts at nearly $1,000 less than the Nissan Altima, and this difference in price generally remains as you move up in different trim levels with more features and options for both models.
Considering how similar a lot of the things you can get on each of these vehicles are, that price difference makes the Malibu an excellent overall value and a great choice for a wide range of drivers. For example, the Malibu comes with the Chevy Safety Assist suite of advanced driver assistance features standard on every model, while the Altima comes with Nissan Safety Shield 360 that includes a lot of similar features—but you pay less for the Malibu while enjoying this advanced tech.
Despite the lower price, there are also some key ways that the Malibu is not merely similar to the Altima but gives you more to enjoy. Where the Nissan Altima has a 7.0-inch infotainment display as standard on the starting S trim, the Malibu comes with a larger 8.0-inch display as its standard infotainment screen.
Taking things even further, you get tremendous freedom and a huge number of options available to you with the Malibu to customize your next car and make it truly your own. There are even three gorgeous special editions available for the Chevy Malibu—including the intimidating Midnight Edition and street-inspired Redline Edition—whereas Nissan does not offer any such editions for the Altima.
These days, one of the most important things to look for in your next vehicle is the kinds of tech features and options available for it. While not everyone wants a car that is connected to the rest of the world 24/7, the reality is that this kind of technology can make your daily routine a lot easier.
It is easy to say that an infotainment system is not that important until you find yourself lost and realize that available built-in navigation can make all the difference between having a good day with a mild inconvenience and dealing with a total disaster. That is one of the reasons we love the standard and available tech in the Malibu, which gives you more than the Altima.
For starters, the 2024 Nissan Altima S—this model's starting trim level—comes with a 7.0-inch infotainment display. That screen size is fine, but it's just that: fine. We definitely wish the standard screen in the Altima was larger because it makes it a lot easier to follow navigational directions and to see your apps and other systems that use the display. Beyond this, the Altima has a standard six-speaker sound system, which is nice, plus audio streaming, a remote unlock keyfob, and some similar features.
Looking at the 2024 Chevy Malibu, it is important to remember that this model starts at a lower price as you see that it also gives you more to enjoy. For one thing, you will find a standard 8.0-inch infotainment display up front in the Malibu, which is perfect for use with the available built-in navigation technology and the wide range of apps that you can use with it. A six-speaker sound system is standard in the Malibu, which sounds great, plus you get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Combine that with more standard tech like keyless open, keyless start, and remote start, and you have a vehicle that is incredibly fun to own and drive.
When shopping for your next vehicle, we would say nothing is more important than how well it will help protect you and keep you safe on the road. Even the best tech features and most stylish design are pointless if your vehicle is not built to protect you and your loved ones. Fortunately, Chevy and Nissan both understand this since they deliver impressive standard safety features in their models. While the Altima has a lot to like, we think Chevy still takes the lead with the Malibu and the upgraded features it brings to the road.
The 2024 Altima comes with Nissan Safety Shield 360 standard on every model, which is Nissan’s suite of advanced safety tech. This includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, plus a Lane Departure Warning and High Beam Assist. We are happy to see things like Rear Automatic Braking, too, which enhances how safe the Altima is in parking lots and when maneuvering in similar situations. More features are available, but that adds to the price, and many of them require higher trim levels.
With the Malibu, you get Chevy Safety Assist standard on every model, which includes a Forward Collision Alert to warn you about a potential collision. You also get Automatic Emergency Braking to help you avoid a crash with Front Pedestrian Braking that can automatically provide hard emergency braking to avoid striking a pedestrian. The Altima comes with Lane Keep Assist with a Lane Departure Warning to help you stay safely in your lane, as well as a Following Distance Indicator to warn you when you are too close to the vehicle ahead of you.
For the 2024 model year, Chevy has added Rear Park Assist as a standard feature on all models, which is the perfect addition to an already impressive suite of safety tech.
One of the things we enjoy most about shopping for a new vehicle is the freedom to customize it and make it truly our own. This includes things like looking at different trim levels and available options, as well as the different exterior colors available and options for interior upholstery and materials. One of the most exciting ways to customize a new vehicle is with a special edition that can include exclusive features and details designed to elevate your ride to the next level. This is something Chevy clearly understands, whereas Nissan has missed the mark.
Looking at the 2024 Nissan Altima, there are plenty of options for different trim levels, much like with the Chevy Malibu, and a decent number of exterior colors available. What it lacks, however, is any sort of special editions that let you elevate and customize your driving experience further.
With the Malibu, Chevy gives you an exciting array of unique special editions to choose from, like the Midnight Edition with its 19-inch black wheels and black front and rear bowtie emblems. You also get a stunning blacked-out grille and black nameplate badge to go along with the Midnight Edition’s Mosaic Black Metallic exterior.
If you want something a little less intimidating, then the Sport Edition of the Malibu gets you similar 19-inch black wheels and bowtie emblems but with more exterior colors available. This way, you can pair these gorgeous black details with a Radiant Red Tintcoat exterior or the new Lakeshore Blue Metallic option introduced for the 2024 model.
The Redline Edition is probably our favorite, however, giving you 19-inch black wheels with red hash marks, a black nameplate badge with a red outline, and black outside mirrors with unique Redline decals. These details come together to create a gorgeous ride that is sure to turn heads every time you hit the road.
