Large, safe, and feature-rich, the three-row Chevy Traverse has always been the SUV crossover of choice for those who wanted something suited for the family but not unwieldy on the road. The Traverse combines many great features to provide a great driving experience, whether you're behind the wheel or in a passenger seat, but when it comes to model years—specifically the 2024 Chevy Traverse vs 2023 Chevy Traverse—which one do you go with?

The 2023 Chevy Traverse boasts all of the features that have accumulated throughout the second generation since the 2018 model year debuted. It doesn't offer much in the way of new features, as the 2023 model year was the final model year outing for the second generation; thus, the only new additions for 2023 are two premium color options in the form of Radiant Red Tintcoat and Sterling Gray Metallic. There's also the addition of the wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, which are now standard on select trims—a lineup that includes the LS, LT Cloth, LT Leather, RS, Premier, and the High Country.

Redesigned, revamped, and ready for adventure, the all-new 2024 Chevy Traverse is here to make waves. It's a complete overhaul of the Traverse for a new third-generation outing, featuring upgraded tech, an overhauled interior, a restyled exterior, and a completely new trim lineup of the base LS, the advanced LT, the off-road-capable Z71, and the performance-oriented RS. The 2024 Traverse features an all-new powertrain and all-new safety technologies, and just about every aspect has been upgraded and updated, giving you a more thorough and complete driving experience with the new generation's debut model.

  • Performance

One of the biggest changes to the 2024 Chevy Traverse has been in its powertrain capabilities. Chevy's engineers have changed up the performance scaling and profile of the Traverse, giving the new model a lot more oomph under the hood, which will surely be appreciated by those who want good performance out of their three-row crossover. This comes on the heels of the previous model, which was focused more on efficiency.

The outgoing 2023 Chevy Traverse was powered by a 3.6L V6, which produced 310 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. That V6 is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes come standard, and the 2023 Traverse is available both in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive with automatic stop/start technology. You also get a drive mode selector, stability management, and traction control in the StabiliTrak system.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse completely forgoes the outgoing V6 for a more finely tuned turbocharged inline four-cylinder. This all-new 2.5L Turbo I-4 now produces an estimated 328 hp and 326 lb-ft of torque, which provides you with approximately 6% additional horsepower and a massive 23% additional torque over the 2023 Traverse. That translates into better use of the vehicle's power and more responsive acceleration for the new generation.

What's more, this drivetrain has been completely overhauled for the 2024 model year Traverse, pairing the 2.5L four-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic transmission, along with an improvement to the all-wheel drive system. Chevy now utilizes a twin-clutch all-wheel drive design, giving you better-optimized stability and traction, even when you travel off-road. This pairs with all-new unique dampers and hydraulic rebound control for the suspension to make the Traverse even more capable and stable than ever before when traversing off-road. Additionally, there is the all-new Terrain Mode—as part of the multiple driver-selected modes available—specifically designed to take advantage of the new generation Traverse's off-road capabilities.

  • Design

A grey 2024 Chevy Traverse Z71 is shown from the front parked on top of a mountain trail.

Part of the appeal of the 2024 Chevy Traverse is in its all-new design language. It's still a large three-row SUV, but it's no longer just a large passenger vehicle like the outgoing 2023 Traverse; rather, Chevy has implemented a new design language for the 2024 model that drastically differs from the previous generation. The silhouette still carries some similarities to Chevy's signature design, but there are some big differences in both the profile and functionality of the newer model.

When it comes to the exterior, you'll note a vastly different look to the front fascia between the 2023 and 2024 Traverse. The entire light array has been given a more sleek and modern look to match the Silverado 1500's fascia, along with a bold interlinking grille with the Chevy bowtie in the upper center. The fog lamp housing shares the body panel coloring, while the lower bumper and diffuser have a glossy black design, giving the 2024 Traverse's front fascia a nice two-tone palette. There is a new panoramic dual-glass sunroof as well.

The side profile of the Traverse has also seen a change compared to the 2023 model, with the C-pillar offering a unique design with the rear-side window connecting to the B-pillar, giving the Traverse a futuristic look. The rear fascia also sports many of the design cues from the front fascia, such as sleek taillights and a rear roof lip to highlight the Traverse's more sports-oriented design.

By comparison, the 2023 Traverse has a more conservative and standard look to its side profile, with a sleek separation between the C-pillar and the rear glass, but it is not quite as prominent as the one from the 2024 Traverse. The front and rear fascia for the 2023 model also houses the previous generation's design language, which focused on chrome surround and a brightly outlined Chevy bowtie badge.

But the changes to the design aren't just about looks. There's also a difference in what you get with those design changes in terms of functionality when it comes to the 2024 Traverse versus the 2023 Traverse. For instance, due to the improved suspension and upgraded stability management, the 2024 Traverse has a one-inch ride height increase over the outgoing generation. The new model year also has an increased track width, enabling better stability when making turns. Additionally, the Z71 trim for the 2024 Traverse includes 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, so it's specifically designed to take advantage of the new SUV's off-road capabilities.

  • Technology

Technology is a big selling point for a lot of new vehicles these days. If a vehicle feels under-equipped or lacking in key areas, it can definitely affect its overall sales appeal for potential SUV shoppers. The 2023 Traverse already came with a lot of great technology, so that was never going to be an issue for Chevy. However, they decided that what the 2023 Traverse had was just not enough, and for the 2024 model, it was all about elevating that standard to the next level. When you compare the two, you can see how vastly different the infotainment and safety suite features are.

For the 2023 Traverse, you have two different infotainment screen sizes, with the base trims having the 7.0-inch touchscreen for the Chevrolet Infotainment System and higher trims having the 8.0-inch HD touchscreen. The 2023 Traverse—of course—has access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Built-in navigation, Bluetooth, and features like HD Surround are also available, along with interior lighting and an available Bose premium sound system.

For the 2024 Traverse, the infotainment system has seen an expansive upgrade. Instead of being limited to a max of eight inches, the 2024 Traverse has been significantly upgraded to a 17.7-inch HD touchscreen. In addition to the much larger touchscreen, there is also a wireless charging pad, giving you an easy opportunity to keep your smart devices charged up. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard features, along with Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Wi-Fi hotspot support and six USB ports also come standard, along with OnStar integration.

Beyond that, the 2024 Traverse also has more enhanced features than the 2023 Traverse when it comes to the digital driver display, such as the 11.0-inch configurable HD touchscreen. The Traverse's safety has also been upgraded over the 2023 model. In addition to the standard safety assortments, such as the Teen Driver mode, there is also the inclusion of Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Front Pedestrian Braking, and IntelliBeam High Beam Assist. There is also available Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking, Side Bicyclist Alert, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert; this gives you even more safety and driver assistance features for the 2024 Traverse compared to what you get from the 2023 Traverse.
