    The Chevrolet Trax is back for the 2024 model year and is showing buyers a whole new side of itself. The Chevy Trax has been through a lot of ups and downs in its short time on the market. Chevrolet first began making this subcompact SUV in 2013, and by 2015 it hit the US markets. By 2021, its trim options were downsized, and by 2022 Chevrolet announced they were taking it off the market. At that time, sales of the Trax were down, and Chevy reportedly wanted to focus on its other subcompact SUV, the Trailblazer. Similar in size and price, the Trax and Trailblazer occupied the same space for a while, so we can understand why Chevy chose to put the slower-selling one on pause.

    This pause, however, was short. Chevy recently announced that the Chevy Trax will be back for the 2024 model year, and it's coming back with a bang. This iconic American automaker has sunk a lot of time and effort into the design of this revamped model. The new Trax stands out from the crowd now and is a distinctly different offering than the Trailblazer. Most importantly, it's considerably different even from the previous Trax on the market—the 2022 model. If you're wondering how the 2024 Chevy Trax vs 2022 Chevy Trax compare, we'd be glad to highlight some of the biggest differences. Most drivers can tell immediately that the two look like their own entities, but there are far more subtle changes to be found inside and under the hood.

  • Interior

    Even though subcompact is the smallest category of SUV, Chevy made significant changes to the 2024 Trax so that the interior doesn't feel cramped. This new 2024 model is all-around larger than the 2022 model, which had an overall length of 167.6 inches and an overall width of 69.9 inches. Meanwhile, the 2024 Trax has an overall length of 178.6 inches and an overall width of 71.7 inches. So you're getting nearly a foot more in length on the 2024 model, as well as about two more inches of width. Interestingly enough, Chevy chose to lower the 2024 model by four inches; while the 2024 Trax is 61.4 inches tall, the shortest of the 2022 trims was 64.9 inches, and some went up to 66 inches.

    This wider, longer, and lower stance of the 2024 Trax gives it a distinctly muscular look, especially when compared to the more rounded look of the 2022 model. It also creates a better feeling of control behind the wheel, as the lowered height improves aerodynamics and enables drivers to feel more connected to the road.

    On the inside of the 2024 model, you'll find three more inches of legroom in the backseat to keep those passengers content. The 2024 model boasts 38.7 inches of rear legroom, whereas the 2022 model had just 35.7 inches. A few inches might seem minor, but it will make all the difference for your taller passengers. You're also going to get some more elbow room for passengers in the 2024 Trax; it has 54.3 inches of shoulder room in the rear, whereas the 2022 had 52.8 inches of rear shoulder room. Finally, the overall cargo area of the 2024 increases, too; it's up by a noteworthy 12% compared to the 2022 model, allowing for more luggage and personal belongings.

  • Technology

    The 2022 Chevy Trax was maligned for having a limited suite of driver assistance features. It had a standard rear vision camera, but more advanced features like side blind zone alerts and rear park assist had cost drivers extra. Chevrolet addresses this drawback of the 2022 Trax with its new 2024 model, which arrives on the market with more standard—and more available—driver assistance features.

    For the 2024 year, you'll get a standard forward collision alert and automatic emergency braking. You'll also get front pedestrian braking and lane keep assist to help prevent the most common types of accidents. Additionally standard for the 2024 year is the following distance indicator that helps drivers keep a safe distance between their vehicle and the one ahead of them, along with IntelliBeam high beams that automatically activate in low light conditions and then dim for oncoming traffic.

    Furthermore, while the 2022 did have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you needed a USB cable to connect your smartphone to the infotainment interface. The 2024 Trax offers wireless smartphone use, eliminating the need for cords in the driver's area. Another wireless feature that's new for the 2024 Trax is the wireless charging deck. Together, these wireless features help you create a tidier and more efficient captain's nook.

    It should also be noted that the standard color touchscreen increases in size by one inch for the 2024 year. It sits at eight inches for the 2024 Trax, compared to seven inches in the 2022 model, giving drivers just a little more area to view their navigation and other apps.

    Chevy also slightly redesigned the dash area to be more driver-focused. The touchscreen is canted slightly downward for easier viewing, and the instrument panel has been slightly lowered to allow more visibility out of the windshield. Drivers can also look for a few new standard features on the 2024 that didn't come on the 2022 Trax, including automatic climate control and a push-button start.

  • Performance

    The change in engines for the 2024 year marks an interesting shift. This new model gets better fuel economy than the 2022 model, albeit with less horsepower. For reference, the 2022 Trax had a 1.4L EcoTec Turbo I-4, and the 2024 model has a 1.2L EcoTec Turbo I-3; this results in an EPA-estimated 30 MPG combined—or 28 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway—for the 2024 model compared to the 27 MPG combined—or 24 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway—with the 2022 model. If fuel economy is your priority, then the 2024 Trax will be a far more appealing model.

    The trade-off is that the 2024 model sees a substantial dip in horsepower. It sits at 155 hp for the 2022 Trax, and drops to 137 hp for the 2024 year. This is a change you might feel when accelerating off the line, but for some drivers, the increase in fuel efficiency could be well worth it.

    One of the more interesting changes for the 2024 model year is the increase in trim options. For the 2022 model, there are only two options: the LS and the LT. However, for the 2024 model year, Chevy has added the 1RS, 2RS, and ACTIV. Through these new trims, you'll find added comfort features such as heated driver and front passenger seats and a heated, flat-bottomed steering wheel (on the 1RS), a sunroof package, remote start, and keyless open (2RS), and other features that give the 2024 model some luxury points missing in the 2022 model.

    The 2022 model is still an impressive vehicle that delivers a lot of excellent features for its low price point; the 2024 trim options simply make this vehicle appealing to a greater range of drivers. It's also worth noting that, at a time when vehicle prices seem to be increasing rapidly across the board, Chevy actually brought back the 2024 Trax with a lower starting MSRP compared to that of the 2022 model.
