It is also why Joni Mitchell used the line “breaking like the waves at Malibu” to evoke a more carefree time in “Trouble Child.” Chevy named its midsize sedan for this gorgeous stretch of coastline back in 1964. An Auspicious Start to Having Fun in the Warm Sun

Today, the Malibu is a midsize sedan, but that’s not how it started. The first Malibu was actually a trim level on the popular Chevelle model. Offered as a coupe, sedan, and station wagon, the first 1964 Malibu name was trying to be a bit of all things to all people. However, for drivers who loved to have fun in the sun, Chevy offered the Chevelle Malibu with a convertible. Nothing could make it feel like you are cruising down the Pacific Coast highway quite like a Malibu convertible, even if you were stuck in traffic on I-70 during rush hour.  

In addition to all the style choices, Chevy offered a number of different engines on the first-generation Malibu. Drivers could choose between a number of economical V6 gas engines, or they could go all out with a powerful 5.4-liter V8 on a Malibu SS model, delivering a massive 350 horsepower. This need for speed continued through the second generation Malibu, which hit the roads running in 1968. Chevy kept making the engines bigger and more powerful in keeping with America’s love affair with the muscle car.

Going for Fun in a Third-Generation Malibu

Whether or not you had an aching in your heart like Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, you could cruise to Malibu or simply drive to work with the radio playing in a third-generation Chevelle Malibu starting in 1973. The styling changed to fit the times, with a boxier frame sporting a partial Landau roof on some models. The model continued to be offered with sedan, coupe, station wagon, and convertible designs. This gave drivers the ability to get that carefree feeling in a Malibu no matter what kind of car they needed.

Chevy also continued to offer the Malibu with a powerful V8 engine, helping the third-generation model to capture 25 NASCAR titles. However, the reality of spiking gas prices intruded on the fun, leading Chevy to scale back production on the massive engines, moving to more economical I-6 powertrains by the end of the run.

The Fourth Generation Saw the Malibu Flying Free

Chevy introduced a fourth-generation Malibu in 1978. In addition to dropping the Chevelle name that had been part of the model since 1964, Chevy no longer offered the convertible and the SS models. The fourth-generation Malibu was a smaller model with more economical engines. This was dictated by new fuel economy and engine emission standards. While it still had that classic 70s styling, the Malibu that had captured the American imagination was gone, much like the malaise that had swept the country in the late 70s. By 1983, the Malibu was gone. But it was not forgotten. And that was not the end of the Malibu’s story.

The Return of Malibu Love

After a fourteen-year break, Chevy decided to bring back the Malibu for a new round of automotive enjoyment. For the fifth generation of the model, the folks at Chevy decided to scale back the offerings to a single four-door sedan design. This would be the design for the Malibu going forward into future generations. 

The reintroduction of the Malibu gave drivers a sleeker, more aerodynamic design than the prior models in the 70s and 80s. In addition, the Malibu offered better fuel economy, something that Chevy would improve upon in each succeeding model generation. Multiple engines were offered on this model as well, something that Chevy would continue up through 2024. One was a 2.4-liter I-4, and the other a 3.1-liter V6. 

A sixth generation would arrive in 2004, offering a short-lived hatchback option. This increased the trunk space on the Malibu but didn’t prove popular with many drivers. By the seventh generation, it was gone, although drivers weren’t upset since Chevy offered them four different engine options. In addition to a 3.5-liter V6, a 3.6-liter V6, and a 2.4-liter I-4, drivers could opt for a mild hybrid system on an I-4 gas engine, boosting fuel economy on their Malibu.

When the eighth-generation Malibu arrived in 2013, the V6 and hybrid engines were gone, replaced with three versions of an I-4 gas engine, one sporting a turbocharger to boost performance. In addition, infotainment systems became standard on the Malibu, helping drivers stay connected wherever they might roam. Now, they could cruise around playing the Eagles, the Beach Boys, or any other great band you love.

Playing in a Malibu

Premiering in 2016, the ninth generation of the Malibu took all of the improvements from the prior eight generations and came out with a midsize sedan that worked for everyone. The fuel-efficient Malibu of the prior years since its reintroduction was taken to another level in a model that could get up to 30 miles per gallon in combined fuel economy. The roominess of the 70s Malibu returned in a model that earned the name first chosen in the 60s.

Still, the ninth-generation Malibu went places that the prior models could only dream about. The 2025 Chevy Malibu features an exceptionally fuel-efficient 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4 gas engine with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The turbocharger gives it a kick in acceleration, while the CVT keeps it all working efficiently. 

The 2025 Chevy Malibu also has technology that didn’t exist for prior generations. The Chevy Safety Assist suite of advanced driver assistance features comes standard on the Malibu. This gives you things like Forward Collision Alert to let you know if an accident with the vehicle in front of you is likely to occur and Automatic Emergency Braking, which activates the Malibu’s emergency brakes so you can avoid a collision or reduce the impact of one that is unavoidable. In all, you get six different features, with the ability to add more depending on which trim level you choose.

You can also stay connected in your Malibu. Each model has an advanced Chevrolet Infotainment System on an 8-inch diagonal touch-screen. This allows you to pair your phones using wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can stay connected even if you leave your cables at home. With this feature, you are able to make hands-free calls and texts, so you can stay safe while staying connected. You can also stream your favorite apps, so the only hard part is getting everyone to agree on what playlist you are listening to.
